Red Bull has been dominating the sport. After their Championship win in 2021, they have become the team to watch. Red Bull’s star driver, Max Verstappen has brought the team their 13th consecutive win. But this incredible achievement has left Toto Wolff with a lot to think about. The Mercedes team principal, who once watched his team dominate the sport is now witnessing their rivals take that spot.
Before the 2021 Red Bull win, Mercedes dominated the sport for seven years. They won the Constructor’s Championship eight times in a row. With this sort of dominance and no other team to challenge them, Mercedes enjoyed seven years at the top. However, this left Red Bull with working twice as hard to beat them. And soon this was the result they saw after Verstappen winning his first Championship title.
Christian Horner, recently, also talked about his need to win against Mercedes and talked about the sleepless nights it left him with. Horner’s confession of watching Mercedes’s domination was in his words a “jail sentence.” And while the two teams have a long history of their battles, it seems they can not let this one pass easily.
Toto Wolff fights back against Christian Horner’s “jail sentence” comments
After Christian Horner sat down and talk about Mercedes’ “jail sentence-like” domination, Toto Wolf was not the one to back down. After Red Bull’s team principal’s statement, Toto used Sergio Perez’s performance to hurt Red Bull. Toto Wolff mentioned how although they were winning over and over, at least both their cars could fight each other.
Although the Red Bull team has been celebrating victories after victories, the constant downgrade of one of their cars has been a focus point quite a few times. And it seems even Toto could not hold back the opportunity to call them for it. While Max Verstappen stays winning, Perez’s performance has fluctuated throughout the season with only two race wins.
Toto Wolff told Motorsport.com, “I don’t know whether our dominance was similar or less as I think we had years where we did it in the same way, but at least we had two cars that were fighting each other,”
“So that caused a little bit of entertainment for everyone, and that’s not the case at the moment.”
With only one Red Bull driver winning while the other one was lost from the podium at times caused Toto took a dig at Red Bull yet again. Although Mercedes dominated, according to Toto, they had both their cars fighting each other in the front. But with Red Bull’s dominance, only Max Verstappen seems to benefit overall. Toto’s dig at Perez and Red Bull ended with him saying that Mercedes’ fight is not over yet.
