Mean green machine is the only one of its kind available in Australia and has covered less than 30,000km

The Dodge Viper is one of America’s most famous and iconic performance cars and over five generations between 1991 and 2017 captivated legions of fans around the world with its distinctive long-bonnet silhouette and monstrous V10 engines.

Australians were never officially offered the vicious muscle car, but that didn’t stop a few diehard fans importing them privately and, in some rare instances, converting them to right-hand-drive.

That’s exactly the backstory with this particular 2008 Dodge Viper SRT-10 manual currently listed at carsales for a cool $179,990 plus on-road costs.

Cool is the underlying theme of this car when you consider in its lurid ‘Snakeskin Green’ paint work, staggered black alloys, red brake callipers, vented bonnet and, of course, the 8.4-litre V10 lurking underneath its lengthy bonnet.

The fact it’s a convertible only adds to the drama, as do the black racing stripes and the fact the right-hook conversion was carried out by Mustang Motorsport – one of Australia’s biggest distributors of American performance parts and vehicles.

Produced in 2008 and one of the first fourth-generation Vipers to roll out of Conner Avenue, this 447kW/760Nm green machine is fitted as standard with a Tremec TR-6060 six-speed manual transmission, upgraded rear differential and a freer-flowing exhaust system to match the upsized engine.

Dodge claims this combination made the ZB II Viper good for a 3.6-second dash to 100km/h and odds are this fully loaded example is still capable of something close to that given it has only covered 28,765km since rolling off the US production line 15 years ago.

The seller says its previous owners’ fastidiousness (always garaged under a car cover and religiously detailed) and the fact it’s been driven ‘sparingly’ has resulted in it presenting like new inside and out, with the interior headlined by the two-tone colourway, six-speaker Alpine sound system and of course that unmissable gear lever.

“This is a unique opportunity to own one of the most iconic American convertible muscle cars,” said the ad. “First to see and drive will buy immediately, we think it’s worth substantially more.”

There are just six Vipers currently listed on carsales and this is the only ZB II – the first application of the monstrous 8.4-litre V10 that’s continued right up to the Viper’s eventual retirement in 2017.
