With the first deliveries of the Tesla Cybertruck likely just weeks away, newly built release candidate Cybertrucks have been spotted with a brand new wheel design.

When the Cybertruck was first unveiled in 2019, the original prototype featured aero wheel covers. Underneath those covers were 20″ split spoke rims, which future owners could decide to expose, presumably for a minor sacrifice to the range, just like the aero cover on other Tesla vehicles.

Between then and now, the design of the aero covers and the rims have remain unchanged (although we have seen some other designs and colours), having seen both on recent test cars built at the Fremont pilot production line and even what we believe to be release candidate (RC) Cybertrucks coming from Giga Texas.

But with the official release of the Cybertruck just around the corner, it looks like Tesla might go with an entirely new wheel design. The first time this was spotted was on a Cybertruck that had left Giga Texas on an enclosed trailer, a photo of which was shared on Instagram. In this photo we can see the new design is finished in black, and features thicker spokes with a square shape near the center.

There is also what appears to be two plastic trim pieces. At first we thought this was possibly part of the new wheel design, but it doesn’t look like that’s the case. Another photo was shared today by Cybertruck enthusiast @greggertruck of a RC Cybertruck, and it has the same wheels, but without the plastic pieces.

It is not surprising to see these Cybertrucks without the aero covers, as Tesla always ships their vehicles with the wheels exposed and the aero covers inside the vehicle. While we have recently seen a Cybertruck with a completely flat aero wheel cover, those are likely just being used for testing and the original covers seen on the prototype is what will be released as Tesla recently received a patent for their design.
