When it comes to Japanese cars, you can never go wrong with the Mazda MX-5 Miata. The MX-5 Miata is a fun and affordable little sports car that makes a great daily driver but can still deliver a thrilling driving experience when needed. The MX-5 Miata has maintained its popularity since its debut in the ’80s and is now the best-selling two-seat convertible sports car ever made.
Currently in its fourth generation, the MX-5 Miata has stuck to the same winning formula all these years – it offers lightweight construction, near-perfect weight distribution, rear-wheel-drive, and the option of a manual transmission. With the current generation coming to an end, gearheads can’t wait to see how the next generation will compare once it hits the streets in 2025. Before then, here are some of the key details you need to know about the upcoming 2025 Mazda MX-5 Miata.
We used renders by talented artist Timothy Adry Emmanuel to give you an idea of how the 2025 Mazda MX-5 Miata could look like.
4 The Current Mazda MX-5 Miata Is A Sports Car Icon
The venerable Mazda MX-5 Miata is undoubtedly one of the most iconic Japanese cars ever made. The MX-5 Miata completely changed how the world viewed sports cars when it debuted in 1989 as it proved that performance cars didn’t have to be super powerful or expensive to be fun to drive. Instead of straight-line speed and power, the MX-5 Miata prioritized lightness and balanced weight distribution which made it extremely fun to drive.
The MX-5 Miata has stuck around as other Japanese sports cars came and went, and with its popularity not waning any time soon, it seems it will be around for many more years to come.
3 What Will The 2025 Mazda MX-5 Miata Look Like?
Although the Mazda MX-5 Miata has had a few design upgrades over the years, it has largely retained the same dimensions, body profile, and aesthetic features. As Emmanuel’s renders show, we don’t expect a huge change in the upcoming Miata’s design but we expect a modern twist to it.
Like other Mazda models, we expect the upcoming Miata to have the exquisite Kodo design language. Some of the changes we could see include beefed-up fenders and enlarged wheels for a sportier look, side mirrors that reach out from the A-Pillar, and a smoother rear end with streamlined taillights.
One big design change we hope to see is the re-introduction of the iconic pop-up headlights in the first-generation model. However, they will be more curvilinear to meet modern safety standards.
2 Will The 2025 Mazda MX-5 Miata Go Electric?
One thing that has made the MX-5 Miata popular is the fact that it doesn’t need a lot of power to be fun to drive. The current Miata has two engine options, with the most powerful being a 2.0-liter four-pot dishing out 181 hp and 151 lb-ft of torque. We don’t expect a big change here.

However, one of the most significant changes in the MX-5 Miata’s powertrain is that there will be an electrified version. Mazda is on a mission to electrify its entire lineup by 2030, and the Miata won’t be left behind. However, we’re yet to find out which form of electrification the 2025 Miata will adopt – fully electric, hybrid, or plug-in hybrid.
1 How Much Will The 2025 Mazda MX-5 Miata Cost?
One of the main reasons why the Miata is so successful is its affordability. The current Miata starts at around $28,000, making it one of the most affordable new sports cars you can buy today.
