Ford recently announced the ground-breaking ‘FP700’ pack for the Ford F-150 that among other things, adds a 3-liter Whipple supercharger to the pickup truck for big power.
Available on 5-liter Coyote V8-powered F-150s from 2021-2023, users can enjoy a power boost all the way up to Raptor R-levels of insanity. Turning a Ford F-150 XL, XLT, Lariat or Platinum into an almost half-price Ford F-150 Raptor R sounds appealing, but the design of an FP700 could look lackluster when parked up beside the Raptor.
Instagram artist JLord8 has the answer in the form of the ‘Ford Lightning’, the return of an iconic nameplate and some appropriately aggressive styling for the supercharged F-150.
The Ford SVT F-150 Lightning Is A Modern Classic
Ford’s performance arm SVT created two iterations of the Ford SVT F-150 Lightning, with the second generation from 1999-2004 offering up to 380 hp and 450 lb-ft and mental performance almost on par with the GMC Syclone.
In red with the side-exit exhausts and lowered chassis, it looked the part. Nowadays, the F-150 Lightning is an electric version of the pickup truck. JLord8 attempts to recreate the original icon’s style using the F-150 with the FP700 pack as a foundation.
While the FP700 can come in different cab formats, only the single cab could be a real homage to the Lightning. It also gets a body-colored bumper up front, along with a red stripe through the center of the F-150 Lariat’s grille. It is a black gloss fascia, which is one of the upgrades from specific to the FP700 kit.
As well as lowering the chassis, it comes with a black side sill that yes – includes the side-exit exhaust that was such a memorable feature from the Lightning.
How Much Does A Ford SVT F-150 Lightning Cost Today?
There are new wheels, ambiguous in their origin, which look more aggressive, in shiny silver rather than the black or gold color offered in the FP700 pack.
Keen F-150-spotters will notice the altered fender vent aft of the front wheels, and the ‘Lightning’ decal which is the same as the old-school graphic from the old pickup.
A lowered, eye-catching, performance truck for the street like this would surely find its audience. Especially with Raptor-rivalling thrust.
The Ford F-150 Raptor R makes 700 hp and 640 lb-ft – only 50 lb-ft more than FP700-equipped Ford F-150s.
With around 28,000 ‘99-’04 Lightnings rolling off the assembly line, the original pickup is not exceedingly-rare. Average values at auction are nearly $30,000. Compare that to the GMC Syclone which only got produced in 2,998 examples, and it looks like a bargain at $40,000.
