As the automotive industry changes lanes from combustion engines to electrification, manufacturers are winding down this era with a bang. We’re seeing a wealth of powerful performance vehicles with absurd power figures, including the Challenger/Charger twins, BMW’s XM Label Red, Audi’s RS6 Avant, whatever Mercedes can jam an AMG into, and don’t even get me started on the supercar offerings. On the mainstream side, we have the Toyota GR Corolla, Honda Civic Type R, Volkswagen Golf R and to a lesser degree, the Mazda 3 Turbo.
It’s slightly peculiar that Hyundai opted to juice up its Elantra compact sedan in 2022, giving it the full N treatment. Why? Well, for a brand that’s full-steam ahead on electrification — Ioniq 5, Ioniq 6, Kona EV, and nearly all offerings coming with a hybrid option — giving a shrinking segment a boost is odd. However, the decision to N-ify the Elantra is a smart one as it’s a remarkable value proposition for under $40,000.
The 2023 Hyundai Elantra N is a carryover model from 2022. We reviewed the six-speed manual last year, so this year we thought we’d take the DCT iteration for a spin.
