Rise of the Ronin marries a cool historic setting, Group Ninja’s mastery of tough-but-fair fight, and a few good RPG design to make a recreation that’s instantly compelling, and much more enjoyable with buddies. It’s filled with cool little touches, whether or not it’s throwing one thing at an enemy with the grappling rope or dropping out of your glider onto your horse. Sadly, it’s additionally a recreation filled with map litter, bloated methods, and a really absurd quantity of junk loot, and the time I spent clearing out the whole lot that didn’t spark pleasure and coping with all these non-essential methods made me pine for a leaner, meaner, extra targeted recreation. Rise of the Ronin is great when it has the braveness to be itself and lean into its difficult, rewarding preventing; too typically, nevertheless, it feels caught in indecision, torn between what it desires to be and what it feels it’s anticipated to be, and never even one of the best samurai can overcome that.
